Chavies, Kentucky
Chavies (41727) is a residential hamlet with U.S. Post Office located in Perry County, Kentucky, United States. Located deep in the eastern coal fields region of the state, it is serviced by KY 28 along the banks of the Licking River. According to data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2000, it has a population of 422. The communities name is a derivation of the Portuguese surname Chavez and was named after the first family to settle at this site. They were of Melungeon descent from Western North Carolina. Many residents of this area can trace their ancestry back to the Melungeons, and appear to have features concurrent with others of this ancestry as well.
